Annapurna Circuit Trek in May (Spring)

The Annapurna Circuit Trek in May is an extraordinary journey through the heart of one of Nepal’s most renowned trekking destinations. In late spring, as the monsoon season draws near, May is one of the best months for a classic walk around the Annapurna region. Weather below 3000 meters remains nice and warm, with low nighttime temperatures averaging between 5°C-10°Cand high daytime averages around 10°C-21°C.

May is the ‘month of flowers’ in the Annapurna, where wildflowers bloom in red, blue, and yellow color. This spectacular display of nature, together with the crisp mountain air itself, supplies strength to weary trekkers.

The trek starts from Besisahar and goes past beautiful villages; it takes you through different settlements of the Magar and Gurung indigenous peoples of Nepal to the Thakali-inhabited villages and the Manang/Mustang village, where Tibetan culture is dominant.

Crossing the challenging Thorong La pass at 5,416 meters is a highlight of the Annapurna Circuit. From the pass-on-May treks, you’ll have beautiful views of many high Himalayan peaks, including Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre.

In May, wildlife viewing is at its best in the Annapurna Circuit. The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to various rare and unique flora and fauna. If you are lucky, you can see such elusive animals as the snow leopard, the Himalayan Thar, or even the red panda. Birdwatchers will not be disappointed with more than 400 species, including the national bird of Nepali, the Danphe. The landscapes are breathtaking- more than 1200 species of plants (including several endemic flowers like primulas, rhododendrons, and orchids) thrive in this region.

The highest elevation of your trek will be Thorong La Pass, at 5,416 meters. Views of Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Machhapuchhre will be plentiful on this May trek. With that said, the Annapurna Circuit can technically be trekked any time of year. However, you need to come prepared with the correct gear and an experienced hiking team.

Weather and Temperature of Annapurna Circuit Trek in May

The weather is perfect in May on the Annapurna Circuit. Warm and sunny days, with vibrant blue skies, make this a brilliant time to do any high-altitude treks, including the Annapurna circuit. Moreover, people with lower altitudes experience the best weather as well. Most mornings are clear daily, too, with great views of the Nepal Himalayas hill ranges. However, some sudden afternoon rain can also be expected, especially if the area lies in a lowland region.

The scenery becomes much more stunning at this time of year, with rhododendrons and wildflowers along the trails. Trekkers get good weather, dry trails, and long daylight hours. It is hot during the day, but cold will still loom after sunset, so bring warm clothes. In May, you will trek through different climate zones (sub-tropical to alpine), so seeing a transition among that trail’s vegetation is interesting.

Annapurna Circuit Trek in First Weeks of May

The first weeks of May offer moderate temperatures on the Annapurna Circuit. Expect daytime temperature to be from about 12-22°C (54-72°F) down at lower elevations and 0- 10°C (32-50°F) up at higher elevations. You’ll have dry trails, which are well-marked. It’s a great time of year to go trekking, where the mornings start clear and crisp with little wind; it’s best for mountain views.

  • Temperature: Ranging between 12-22°C and 0-10°C
  • Wind Speed: 5-10 Km/hr
  • Sunrise: 05:28 am
  • Sunset: 18:45 pm

While precipitation, in general, is low, you may experience a brief light shower in the afternoons this time of year- particularly along the lower part of the trail. Humidity remains comfortable, but UV rays are on the rise, so pack sunscreen for the face and lips. The weather is typically stable/steady, with a noticeable increase in heat as spring transitions closer to summer.

Annapurna Circuit Trek in Middle Weeks of May

  • Temperature: Ranging between 15-25°C and 2-12°C
  • Wind Speed: 5-10 Km/hr
  • Sunrise: 05:19 am
  • Sunset: 18:52 pm

It’s mid-spring, and temperatures will rise slightly as May progresses. On lower elevations, the temperatures will be between 15-25°C (59-77°F). And in higher elevations between 2-12°C (36-54°F). The trail conditions are still mostly dry at this time. We do see some rain showers in the afternoons, but not often.

Actually, in May, there is a good chance of rain showers in late afternoons, etc., but they pass quickly within an hour or less and increase humidity for some time. The winds also occur, especially in higher altitude areas. The days start to get warmer, making your walk nice and pleasant during those those hours. However, you still have cooler temperatures during nights, especially on high pass sections.

Annapurna Circuit Trek in Last Weeks of May

  • Temperature: Ranging between 18-28°C and 5-15°C
  • Wind Speed: 5-10 Km/hr
  • Sunrise: 05:13
  • Sunset: 19:01  pm

In the last weeks of May, temperatures can rise further. On average, the lower areas are about 18-28°C (64-82°F) and higher regions 5-15°C (41-59°F). The trail becomes tougher. There will be some slippery trails due to pre-monsoon rains.

Rains are more frequent and heavier, especially in afternoons and lower altitudes. Humidity is growing exponentially. The air feels much warmer on your skin, and everything around you generally feels damp, especially at lower altitudes. Wind patterns are changing, becoming much more active, particularly before storms, with occasional stronger wings. As monsoons approach, skies get overcast; peaks mostly stay hidden.

Annapurna Circuit Trek in May: Difficulty level

The Annapurna Circuit Trek in May is a moderate difficulty (Level 3 out of 5). No technical climbing is involved, but high endurance & mental stamina will be tested. Walking time per day is generally between 6-7 hours, and you’ll cover distance anywhere from 160-230 km. The altitude challenge gets tougher in May, especially at Thorong La Pass (5,416m).

In the first couple of weeks of May, crossing Thorong La Pass can be pretty easy as it doesn’t usually rain. The path getting up to the pass is easy enough to cross, but the presence of ice and snow requires climbers to use crampons and take caution, as this can get tricky. In the first days of May, expect some snow; after mid-week, you will have less snow. However, you’ll still face the steep rise and thin air. By late May, there usually is no more snow on the trail; however, afternoons are always cloudy, so if you don’t want to get wet, start early.

Trekkers should be prepared for altitude sickness any time in May, particularly above 2,500 meters. It is very important to acclimatize well. The remoteness of the trek means limited facilities and a lack of access to modern amenities, so one has to be mentally prepared for it, too.

Variable weather conditions with possible showers or storms in the afternoon mean you need appropriate gear and flexibility. But having said that, May is generally good with stable weather and blooming landscapes, and it’s an excellent month to do this amazing Himalayan journey.

Why Trek to Annapurna Circuit in May (Late Spring Season)?

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit in May is magical. Late spring weather is generally rewarding, with temperatures not too cold and usually sunny skies that provide magnificent Himalayas views. Weather can be unstable at high altitudes, but generally, you will experience less bad weather than in other seasons and very little risk of rain or snowfalls.

Optimal Weather Conditions

May in the Annapurna region has the most pleasant temperature of the year, with daytime temperatures of 10°C-21°C. Mild weather makes it easy to trek and gives you more time to acclimate to higher elevations. Weather is stable; hence, there is no chance of snow storms or unpredictable weather.

Clear Mountain Views

May has low precipitation; therefore, you will mostly have a clear blue sky and amazing views at higher elevations. You will also have panoramic views of mountains like never before, and explorers can get epic photographs and unforgettable memories.

Blooming Landscapes

In spring, the Annapurna Circuit flowers into a colourful heaven. Rhododendrons and many other wildflowers cover the lower altitudes. As the snow melts away, many of waterfalls and whitewater rivers gush, set against a backdrop of lush green scenery along your hike.

Wildlife and Birdwatching Opportunities

May is suitable for nature lovers in general and wildlife enthusiasts in particular. When the climate becomes favorable, animals in the Annapurna Conservation Area are also more observable in the wild, so sighting the elusive species becomes easy. Migratory birds are also found in this region, ideal for birdwatching activity.

Less Crowds

May is also a good time to travel because it comes before the monsoon period and is not as crowded as other seasons. There are fewer crowds likely on tracks, so tourists can become even more comfortable and be more immersed with locals without crowds of other tourists.

Long Sunny Days

You may have more daylight with 13 – 14 hours of sunshine each day. You won’t feel as rushed on your trek to make it to your destination for the night when you have that long day to explore.

Easier Thorong La Pass Crossing

Thorong La Pass, the highest point on the trek at 5,416 meters, is easier to cross in May. By then, most of the ice would have melted away, and there would be minimal chances of snowfall and rain. And if you do go in May, you will have less snow to trudge through at the pass. But still, get acclimated no matter what month you decide. It’s just slightly less hard for trekkers at this elevation in May.

Annapurna Circuit Trek in May: Success and Death Ratio

Annapurna Circuit Trek in May can be considered one of the best high-altitude treks, with 98% to 100% success rates. The reasons, of course, are the good weather with low precipitation, great visibility, and relatively warm temperatures throughout May.

Moreover, death on the Annapurna Circuit Trek during May is unheard of. The statistics for deaths from trekking from the period of 1984 to 1991 showed a ratio of 14 to 15 per death per 100,000 trekkers in Nepal. However, the safety features have vastly improved since those times, and acclimatization and knowledge of altitude sickness for guides and climbers have increased, thereby reducing the chances of death.

In general, May provides a safer trekking window due to stable weather. The lower risk of sudden weather changes, which were the reason behind accidents like the October 2014 tragedy, makes it the month requiring the least precautions for trekking. Also, clear weather reduces the risk of avalanches that are otherwise common during other seasons.

How Are The Accommodations During Annapurna Circuit Trek in May?

During the May Annapurna Circuit Trek, accommodation is comfortable as tea houses provide basic but cozy lodging. May is a shoulder season, so you will find fewer trekkers than in April. Early May witnessed more trekkers, while by late May, many had left as monsoons set in.

Tea houses have single or shared rooms with clean beds, blankets, and sometimes attached bathrooms. You don’t necessarily have to book tea houses on the trail in advance in May except for popular places like Manang and Muktinath. Tea houses also provide meals – breakfasts and dinners so you can try local dishes while enjoying warm hospitality.

With each passing day in May, higher elevations see fewer trekkers, so your choice of accommodation opens up quite a bit if you decide to go on the Annapurna circuit trek in the last weeks. The weather is mostly clear & perfect, not very chilly. It is an excellent time to hike due to fewer crowds and to just chill out at the tea house after a day’s trek.

Permits Requirements for Annapurna Circuit Trek in May

Trekking permits are mandatory for all treks in Nepal, including the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The permits are usually issued by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) or its local offices at trailheads. For our Annapurna Circuit Trek in May, you will need to get hold of two specific permits to visit the spectacular landscapes of the Annapurna region.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

ACAP is a must when entering the Annapurna Conservation Area. The cost depends upon nationality.

  • SAARC nationals: NPR 1000 per person (around $10)
  • All other foreign nationals: NPR 3000 per person (approximately $30)

Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card

The TIMS Card is another necessary permit issued for the safety and security of the trekkers. It will cost NPR 2,000 for all nationalities if whether they are trekking solo or in a group.

Additional Information

All government taxes and fees are exclusive of the given rates. Kids below 10 years old can access the area for free. Trekkers can also obtain it from the NTB office in Kathmandu or Pokhara for their easy process. We should keep these permits with us, as these are often checked at  different registered check posts.
